Jorat-Menthue is a municipality in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of Vaud. This area is part of the Gros-de-Vaud district.

The municipality was created on July 1, 2011. It was formed by combining five smaller towns. These towns were Villars-Tiercelin, Montaubion-Chardonney, Sottens, Villars-Mendraz, and Peney-le-Jorat.

History of Jorat-Menthue

Early Mentions of the Towns

The towns that now form Jorat-Menthue have a long history. Montaubion-Chardonney was first mentioned in the year 1200. It was known as in Monte Albeonis.

Later, in 1223, Montaubion was called Montalbium. Chardonney was mentioned as Chardenai in the same year. Sottens first appeared in records in 1147 as Sotens. Peney-le-Jorat was first mentioned around 1141-1143 as Pinoy.

Jorat-Menthue covers an area of about 20.89 square kilometers (8.07 square miles). A large part of this land is used for farming. About 56.8% of the area is agricultural land.

Forests cover a significant portion, too. About 36.1% of Jorat-Menthue is covered by trees. The remaining land is used for buildings and roads. This settled area makes up about 6.3% of the municipality.

Sottens Transmitter: A National Heritage Site

One very important place in Jorat-Menthue is the Emetteur National De Sottens. This is also known as the Sottens transmitter. It is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance. This means it is a very important historical and cultural landmark for the country.

The Sottens Transmitter is a powerful radio tower. It sends out radio signals for the French-speaking Radio Suisse Romande. This radio station can be heard across most of Europe at night.
