Peney-le-Jorat was a small town, or municipality, in the Gros-de-Vaud area of Vaud in Switzerland. It's located in the southwest of Switzerland, close to France and Italy.
On July 1, 2011, Peney-le-Jorat joined with the nearby villages of Villars-Tiercelin, Montaubion-Chardonney, Sottens, and Villars-Mendraz. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Jorat-Menthue.

A Look Back: Peney-le-Jorat's History
Peney-le-Jorat was first mentioned a very long time ago, around the years 1141-1143. Back then, it was known as Pinoy.
Exploring the Geography of Peney-le-Jorat
As of 2009, Peney-le-Jorat covered an area of about 4.5 square kilometers (1.7 square miles). A large part of this land, about 55%, was used for farming. Nearly 40% was covered by forests. The remaining small part, about 6%, had buildings and roads.
Most of the built-up area was for homes and other buildings. The rest was for roads and transportation. In the forested areas, most of the land was dense forest. A small part had orchards or groups of trees. For farming, most land was used for growing crops, and some was used for pastures for animals.
Until August 31, 2006, Peney-le-Jorat was part of the Oron District. After that, it became part of the new Gros-de-Vaud District. The village itself is located on a flat area in the middle of the Jorat region. It includes the main village and several smaller surrounding areas called hamlets.

The blazon (a special description) of Peney-le-Jorat's coat of arms is: Azure, on three Hills as many Pine-trees Argent, in chief two Gad-flies Or. This means the shield is blue. It shows three hills with three silver pine trees on them. At the top, there are two golden gad-flies.

In December 2009, Peney-le-Jorat had a population of 377 people. About 12.6% of these people were foreign nationals in 2008. Over ten years (1999-2009), the population grew by about 25.7%. This growth was due to people moving in and more births than deaths.
Most people in the village (about 91.3%) spoke French in 2000. Portuguese was the second most common language (3.5%), followed by German (3.2%). A few people also spoke Italian.
In 2000, about 30.8% of the people living in Peney-le-Jorat were born there. About 46.2% were born in the same canton (Vaud). The rest were born elsewhere in Switzerland (13.8%) or outside Switzerland (9.0%).
In 2008, there were 4 babies born to Swiss citizens and 2 to non-Swiss citizens. There was 1 death of a Swiss citizen and 1 non-Swiss citizen death. This meant the Swiss population increased by 3, and the foreign population increased by 1. Overall, the total population grew by 2.2% in 2008.

Learning and Schools: Education in Peney-le-Jorat
In Peney-le-Jorat, about 34.9% of the population had finished non-mandatory upper secondary education. This is like high school. About 16.7% had gone on to higher education, such as a university or a specialized college (a Fachhochschule). Of those with higher education, most were Swiss men (57.7%) or Swiss women (36.5%).
In the 2009/2010 school year, there were 53 students in the Peney-le-Jorat school district. In the Vaud canton, two years of optional pre-school are offered. During that school year, 296 children received pre-school care, and 96 of them received financial help for it.
