Drei Höfe is a small town, also called a municipality, located in Switzerland. It's found in the Wasseramt district within the Solothurn canton. A canton is like a state or province in other countries. Drei Höfe was formed on January 1, 2013, when two smaller towns, Heinrichswil-Winistorf and Hersiwil, joined together.
A Look Back: The History of Drei Höfe
The area that makes up Drei Höfe has a long history. The village of Heinrichswil was first mentioned in old writings in 1317. Hersiwil appeared in records a bit later, in 1324.
For a long time, Hersiwil and Heinrichswil were like a "double municipality." This means they worked together as one area. Then, in 1798, another village called Winistorf joined them, making it a "triple municipality."
However, in 1854, these three villages decided to split up and become separate, independent towns. Later, in 1993, Heinrichswil and Winistorf decided to merge again. But Hersiwil chose to stay independent until 2013, when all three finally came together to form the new municipality of Drei Höfe.

The towns that now form Drei Höfe cover a total area of about 4.56 square kilometers (which is about 1.76 square miles).
The area of Heinrichswil-Winistorf is about 3.13 square kilometers (1.21 square miles). A big part of this land, about 50.8%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 40.3% of the area. The remaining 8% is where buildings and roads are located. This part of Drei Höfe sits on a small hill made from a moraine, which is a type of landform created by glaciers.
Hersiwil is a bit smaller, with an area of about 1.43 square kilometers (0.55 square miles). Here, even more land is used for farming, about 67.8%. Forests make up 22.4% of the land. The rest is mostly settled areas (6.3%) and a small amount of rivers or lakes (1.4%).

Looking back at history, the population of these villages has changed over time. For example, in 1850, Heinrichswil-Winistorf had 229 people, and Hersiwil had 137. By the year 2000, Heinrichswil-Winistorf had grown to 528 people, and Hersiwil had 168. This shows that the population in these areas has generally increased over the years.
