Auvernier is a village in the canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. It used to be its own municipality. On January 1, 2013, Auvernier joined with two other villages, Bôle and Colombier, to form a new municipality called Milvignes.

Auvernier's Long History
People have lived in the area around Auvernier since the Bronze Age. This was a very long time ago! Archaeologists have found many old items here. Some of these items, like special bracelets with cool designs, are now in the British Museum.
Auvernier was first mentioned in records in the year 1011. Back then, it was called Averniacum. It also had a German name, Avernach, but that name is not used anymore.
Where is Auvernier?
Auvernier is located in the Boudry district. It sits on the northwest side of Lake Neuchatel.
In 2009, Auvernier covered an area of about 1.7 square kilometers (0.65 square miles). A large part of this land, almost half, is used for farming. A small part is covered by forests. Most of the rest of the land has buildings and roads. There are also some rivers and lakes.

The coat of arms for Auvernier shows a silver fish called a "Perch" swimming on a blue background. This design is called Azure, a Perch nainaint Argent.

In 2011, Auvernier had a population of 1,589 people. Over the past ten years, the number of people living here has slowly grown.
Most people in Auvernier speak French as their main language. This is about 86% of the population. Some people also speak German or Italian.
In 2008, about 48% of the people were male and 52% were female. Many people were born in Auvernier or in the same canton. About 17% of the people were born outside of Switzerland.

Important Historical Places
Auvernier has some very important historical sites. The prehistoric lake shore settlement at Baie D‘Auvernier and Auvernier Castle are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance. This means they are very important to Switzerland's history and culture. The whole village of Auvernier is also part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.
World Heritage Site
Auvernier is home to two prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements: La Saunerie and Les Graviers. These are part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps UNESCO World Heritage Site. A World Heritage Site is a place that UNESCO believes is very important to all of humanity and should be protected. These pile dwellings show how people lived thousands of years ago.

In 2010, the unemployment rate in Auvernier was 3%. This means only a small number of people who wanted to work couldn't find a job.
