Surpierre is a town in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It is located in the Broye district. Over the years, Surpierre has grown by joining with nearby towns. In 2005, it joined with Praratoud. Later, in 2017, it welcomed Villeneuve, and in 2021, Cheiry became part of Surpierre.

Surpierre is an old town. It was first written about in history books in the year 1142. Back then, it was called Super Petram.
The Story of Cheiry
The town of Cheiry also has a long history. It was first mentioned around the years 1184-1185. At that time, its name was Chirie. In 2005, Cheiry itself grew bigger by joining with another town called Chapelle.

Surpierre is in the Broye district. It is in a special area called an exclave. This means it is a part of Fribourg canton, but it is surrounded by the canton of Vaud. The main village of Surpierre is built on a high cliff. From here, you can look down over the Broye valley. The municipality includes the villages of Surpierre and Praratoud.
