A Look Back: Cheiry's History
Cheiry was first mentioned in old records around the years 1184-1185. Back then, it was called Chirie. In 2005, another small town called Chapelle became part of Cheiry, making its area a bit bigger.
Where is Cheiry? (Geography)
Cheiry had an area of about 6.5 square kilometers (about 2.5 square miles). Most of this land, about 65%, was used for farming. Forests covered about 27% of the area. The rest of the land, about 7%, had buildings and roads.
Cheiry was located in the Broye district. It was in a special part of the Surpierre area called an exclave. This means it was a piece of land that belonged to Surpierre but wasn't directly connected to the main part of Surpierre.
Cheiry's Symbol (Coat of Arms)
The town's symbol, or coat of arms, shows a red eagle on a gold background at the top. Below that, on a blue background, there are three silver circles.
Who Lives in Cheiry? (Population)
In 2019, Cheiry had a population of 390 people. Over ten years, from 2000 to 2010, the number of people living there grew by about 4.6%. This growth was mostly because new people moved into the area.
Most people in Cheiry speak French, which is their main language. A smaller number of people speak German or English.
In 2008, a little more than half of the population was male (51.1%), and a little less than half was female (48.9%). Many people living in Cheiry in 2000 were born there or in the same canton. Others were born elsewhere in Switzerland or outside the country.
The population includes children, teenagers, adults of different ages, and seniors. In 2000, there were 119 homes in Cheiry, with about 2.7 people living in each home on average. Most of these homes were lived in all year round.
When it comes to religion, in 2000, most people in Cheiry were Roman Catholic. Many others belonged to the Swiss Reformed Church. A small number of people followed other religions or did not belong to any church.
Here's how Cheiry's population has changed over time:

What People Do: Economy
In 2010, the unemployment rate in Cheiry was low, at 2.1%. This means most people who wanted to work had jobs.
Many people in Cheiry worked in farming. This is called the primary economic sector. There were also some jobs in the secondary sector, which includes things like construction. The tertiary sector had jobs in services, like sales, transportation, and restaurants.
In 2008, there were 52 full-time jobs in Cheiry. Most of these were in agriculture. Some were in construction, and others were in service jobs like sales or education.
Many people who lived in Cheiry traveled to other towns for work. Most of them used a private car to get to their jobs.
Learning and Schools: Education
In Cheiry, about one-third of the people had finished high school. A smaller number, about 5%, had gone on to college or other higher education.
The school system in the Canton of Fribourg starts with one year of optional Kindergarten. Then, students go to six years of Primary school. After that, they have three years of lower Secondary school, where they are grouped by their abilities. Students can then choose to go to a three or four-year upper Secondary school. This can be a gymnasium (which prepares them for university) or a vocational program (which teaches job skills). After upper Secondary, students can go to college or start an apprenticeship (learning a trade on the job).
During the 2010–2011 school year, 43 students attended classes in Cheiry. Some students from Cheiry also went to schools in nearby towns for different levels of education.
