Granges-près-Marnand was once a municipality in Switzerland. It was located in the Broye-Vully area of the canton of Vaud.

On July 1, 2011, Granges-près-Marnand joined with several other towns. These included Cerniaz, Combremont-le-Grand, Combremont-le-Petit, Marnand, Sassel, Seigneux, and Villars-Bramard. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Valbroye.

History of Granges-près-Marnand

Granges-près-Marnand is a very old place. It was first written about in the year 881. Back then, it was known as in fine Graniacense.

Later, in 1228, its name was shortened to Granges. The name we know today, Granges-près-Marnand, was officially adopted much later, in 1952.

Geography and Location

Granges-près-Marnand covers an area of about 7.02 square kilometers (2.71 sq mi). A large part of this land, about 63.7%, is used for farming. This means there are many fields for crops and pastures for animals.

About 21.4% of the area is covered by forests. The rest of the land, about 13%, has buildings and roads. A small part, 2.1%, includes rivers and lakes.

The town is located on the left side of the Broye river. It includes the main village of Granges-près-Marnand and a smaller area called Brit.

The coat of arms for Granges-près-Marnand is quite simple. It shows three silver geese on a red background. This design is called Gules, three Geese Argent.

People and Population (Demographics)

In 2009, Granges-près-Marnand had a population of 1,210 people. Over the ten years before that (1999–2009), the population grew by about 5.9%. This growth was mostly because people moved into the area.

Most people in Granges-près-Marnand speak French. In 2000, about 85.2% of the population spoke French. Other languages spoken include Portuguese (3.8%) and Albanian (3.4%).

Many residents were born in Granges-près-Marnand or elsewhere in Vaud. About 22.8% of the people were born outside of Switzerland.

The population includes people of all ages. In 2009, about 10.2% were children under 9 years old. Teenagers (10-19 years old) made up about 13.3% of the population. Adults aged 20-59 made up a large portion, and about 22% were seniors (60 years and older).

In the 2009/2010 school year, there were 156 students in the local school district. The canton of Vaud provides two years of optional pre-school. There were 80 students in primary school and 74 students in lower secondary school. A few students were also homeschooled.

Many students from other towns came to Granges-près-Marnand for school. Also, some residents of Granges-près-Marnand went to schools outside the municipality.

Transport and Train Connections

Granges-près-Marnand has a train station that connects it to the Réseau Express Vaudois network. This line runs between Palézieux and Payerne.

Sadly, on July 29, 2013, a serious train accident happened here. Two passenger trains had a head-on collision. This accident caused injuries to at least 35 people and resulted in one death.
