Noréaz was once a small town, or municipality, in Switzerland. It was located in the Sarine district, within the Canton of Fribourg.
On January 1, 2020, Noréaz joined with two other nearby towns, Corserey and Prez-vers-Noréaz. They all became part of a new, larger town called Prez. So, Noréaz is now a former municipality.

Ancient History of Noréaz
Noréaz is home to a very old settlement called En Praz des Gueux. This site has prehistoric pile-dwellings, also known as stilt houses. These are houses built on stilts over water or wet ground.
This special site is part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it's a very important place recognized by UNESCO for its historical value.
The Cortaillod Culture Site
En Praz des Gueux is the only ancient lakeside settlement of its kind in the Fribourg area. It dates back to the classic Cortaillod culture period, which was about 4000 to 3500 BC. That's a very long time ago!
The site was found by chance in 1971. It was in a wet, boggy area near the Lac de Seedorf. Under about 70 centimeters (27 inches) of peat, people found old wooden timbers, gravel, and stone slabs. These were all parts of the ancient stilt houses.

The first time Noréaz was ever written about was in the year 1134. It was mentioned as Noarea back then.
Understanding Noréaz's Geography
As of 2009, Noréaz covered an area of about 6.9 square kilometers (2.7 square miles). A large part of this land, about 63.3%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 28.4% of the area.

Around 5.7% of Noréaz's land has buildings or roads. About 2.0% is made up of rivers or lakes. A very small part, 0.1%, is land that cannot be used for anything.
Most of the built-up area includes houses and other buildings. Roads and transportation take up a smaller part. The forests are mostly dense, thick woods. For farming, about 40.9% of the land grows crops. The other 21.6% is used for pastures where animals graze.

Noréaz is located in the Sarine district. It includes the main village of Noréaz itself. It also has a smaller settlement called Seedorf, which is a hamlet (a very small village). The beautiful Lac de Seedorf (Seedorf Lake) is also found within this area.

In 2008, about 49.4% of the population was male and 50.6% was female. Most people in Noréaz were born either in Noréaz itself or in the same canton. About 6.1% of the people were born outside of Switzerland.

The Swiss School System
The Canton of Fribourg has a specific school system. It starts with one year of optional Kindergarten. After that, students go to six years of Primary school.
Then, there are three years of required lower Secondary school. In these years, students are grouped based on their abilities. After this, students can choose to go to a three or four-year upper Secondary school. This can be a gymnasium (which prepares them for university) or a vocational program (which teaches job skills).
After upper Secondary school, students can go to a higher education school or start an apprenticeship (learning a trade on the job).
Students in Noréaz Schools
During the 2010-2011 school year, 131 students attended classes in Noréaz. There was one kindergarten class with 14 students. The town had two primary classes with 35 students.
Noréaz did not have lower secondary classes, but 33 students from Noréaz went to lower secondary school in a nearby town. There were also 82 students in vocational upper secondary classes.
In 2000, 23 students came to Noréaz from other towns for school. At the same time, 50 students from Noréaz went to schools outside the municipality.
