Prez: Home to Ancient Lake Villages
Discovering Old Homes by the Lake
Did you know that the area of Noréaz, now part of Prez, is home to a really old settlement? It's called En Praz des Gueux, and it's a prehistoric pile-dwelling site. These are like houses built on stilts over water or wet ground. This site is so important that it's part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps UNESCO World Heritage Site.
En Praz des Gueux is the only prehistoric lakeside village found on the banks of a small lake in the Canton of Fribourg. This site dates back to the classic Cortaillod era, which was between 4000 and 3500 BC. The site was found by accident in 1971 in a boggy area near the current shore of Lac de Seedorf. Under about 70 centimeters (28 inches) of peat, people discovered old wooden timbers, gravel, and stone slabs.
