A Look Back: Martisberg's History

Martisberg is quite an old place! The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1311. Back then, its name was spelled Martisperg.

Where Martisberg Was: Geography

Before Martisberg merged with Betten, it covered an area of about 3 square kilometers (which is about 1.16 square miles).

A big part of this land, about 42.2%, was used for farming. Forests covered another large section, about 41.2% of the area. Only a small bit, 3.7%, had buildings or roads. The remaining 13% was land that couldn't be used for farming or building.

This former town was located in the Östlich Raron district. It sat on the northern hillsides of the Rhone valley.

Martisberg's Coat of Arms

A coat of arms is like a special symbol for a town or family. Martisberg's coat of arms had a golden background. On it, there was a blue sword pointing downwards and to the left. The sword's handle was black. A red cloth was draped over the sword. At the very bottom, there were green hills.
