Riviera is a new town, also called a municipality, located in the Riviera district. It's part of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. This new town was formed on April 2, 2017, when four smaller towns – Osogna, Lodrino, Iragna, and Cresciano – decided to join together.

A Look Back: How Riviera Was Formed

On October 18, 2015, the people living in Osogna, Lodrino, Iragna, and Cresciano voted to merge their towns. They chose the name Riviera, which is also the name of their district. The Grand Council of Ticino, which is like the main government group for the Ticino canton, officially approved this merger. The new town of Riviera officially began when its first municipal council (a group of elected leaders who help run the town) was chosen.

Exploring Riviera's Nature and Land

Riviera is located in the Riviera district. You can find it south of Biasca and north of Bellinzona. The town sits on both sides of the Ticino River. There are plans to build a fun recreation park along the banks of this river.

The rocks in this area are mostly types called gneisses and granites. You can even find some quarries in Lodrino where these rocks are dug up. The trees in Riviera are mostly deciduous trees, like beeches and chestnut trees, which lose their leaves in the fall. These grow up to about 900 meters (3,000 feet) high. Above that, you'll find evergreen trees, such as spruces and larches, which stay green all year. Chestnuts were once a very important food source for the people living here!

Who Lives in Riviera?

The new town of Riviera has a population of 4,252.

Riviera's Changing Population Over Time

Over the years, the number of people living in the areas that now make up Riviera has changed quite a bit. Like many places, its population has grown and shrunk at different times throughout history.
