Gampel-Bratsch is a municipality in Switzerland. It is located in the Valais canton, within the Leuk district. This municipality was created on January 1, 2009. The people living in the towns of Gampel and Bratsch voted to join together on January 20, 2008.

History of Gampel-Bratsch

The town of Bratsch was first mentioned in old records in 1228 and 1242. Back then, it was known by names like Praes. Over the years, its name changed a few times before becoming Bratsch.

Gampel is also an old settlement. It was first mentioned in records in 1238. At that time, its name was Champilz.

Gampel-Bratsch covers an area of about 23.1 square kilometers (about 8.9 square miles). A large part of this land is used for different purposes.

  • Farmland: About 30.6% of the area is used for farming. This means people grow crops or raise animals there.
  • Forests: Forests cover about 38.0% of the land. These are important natural areas.
  • Buildings and Roads: About 3.5% of the land has buildings or roads on it. This is where people live and travel.
