Wahlern was a town in Switzerland. It was located in the canton of Bern. Wahlern was also the main town of the Bern-Mittelland administrative district.

On January 1, 2011, Wahlern joined with another town called Albligen. Together, they formed a new town named Schwarzenburg.

The town was called Wahlern, but its main area was known as Schwarzenburg. Wahlern was famous for having the transmitters of a shortwave radio station. This station was called Schweizer Radio International. Other smaller areas in Wahlern included Lanzenhäusern and Steinenbrünnen.

Wahlern is located in the Alpenvorland. This is a region of hills and plains. It lies south of the Sense River.

Wahlern covered an area of about 40.5 square kilometers (15.6 square miles). Most of this land, about 63.5%, was used for farming. Forests covered 27.3% of the area. About 7.3% of the land had buildings or roads. The rest (1.9%) was made up of rivers or other natural areas.

Wahlern shared borders with many other towns. These included Köniz, Oberbalm, Rüeggisberg, Rüschegg, Guggisberg, Alterswil, St. Antoni, Heitenried, Albligen, and Ueberstorf.

People Living in Wahlern

As of December 31, 2010, Wahlern had 6,197 people living there. In 2007, about 4.0% of the people were from other countries. Over the past 10 years, the number of people living in Wahlern grew by 2.5%.

Most people in Wahlern spoke German (95.9%). French was the second most common language (0.7%). Albanian was the third most common language (0.7%).

In the 2007 election, the most popular political party was the SVP. They received 44.6% of the votes. Other popular parties were the SPS (19%), the FDP (10.5%), and the Green Party (10.1%).

In 2000, children and teenagers (0–19 years old) made up 26.1% of the population. Adults (20–64 years old) were 59.3%. Seniors (over 64 years old) made up 14.6%. Most adults in Wahlern had a good education. About 74.1% of people aged 25-64 had finished high school or gone to college.

Wahlern had a low unemployment rate of 1.18%. In 2005, many people worked in farming. About 606 people worked in this area. There were also 1,076 people working in factories and manufacturing. Another 1,189 people worked in service jobs, like shops or offices.

Getting Around Wahlern

Schwarzenburg was the last stop on the Bern-Schwarzenburg-Bahn train line. This train line opened in 1907. Today, it is part of the BLS AG company. Lanzenhäusern also had its own train station.

Wahlern did not have its own postal code. Mail for Wahlern was sent to 3150 Schwarzenburg or 3148 Lanzenhäusern.

Important Historical Places

Several places in Wahlern are considered very important historical sites in Switzerland. These include:

  • The farm house Aeckenmatt at Aeckenmatt 6.
  • The old ruins of Grasburg Castle.
  • The Frühmesskapelle at Käppeligässli 5.
  • The Rossgrabenbrücke (a bridge shared with Rüeggisberg).
  • Schwarzenburg Castle.
  • The granary at Henzischwand 298 A.

The whole village of Schwarzenburg is also a special heritage site. So are the small areas of Äckenmatt and Elisried.
