Bettenhausen is a small town, also called a municipality, located in Switzerland. It is part of the Bern canton and the Oberaargau area. On January 1, 2011, a nearby town called Bollodingen joined with Bettenhausen.

History of Bettenhausen

Bettenhausen was first mentioned in old writings in the year 1335. Back then, it was called Bettenhusen.

Early Settlements and Land Ownership

Some very old tools from the neolithic (New Stone Age) have been found here. These tools show that people lived in the Aare valley area long, long ago.

During the Middle Ages, Bettenhausen was owned by a noble family called the Freiherr of Aarburg. In 1429, they sold the village to the town of Burgdorf. Later, in 1509, Burgdorf bought a forest called Ernizhaldenwald. This forest became part of Bettenhausen and is now known as Bettenhausenwald.

Schools and Modern Changes

For a long time, until 1833, Bettenhausen and a nearby town called Thörigen shared one school. After that, they each got their own school. In 1967, Bollodingen joined the Bettenhausen school system. Then, in 2011, Bollodingen officially became part of Bettenhausen.

Today, most people who live in Bettenhausen travel to other towns for work. About one-third of the jobs within Bettenhausen itself are in farming.

Geography of Bettenhausen

Bettenhausen covers an area of about 3.95 square kilometers (1.53 square miles). A big part of this land, about 66.8%, is used for farming. Forests cover about 23.1% of the area.

Bettenhausen includes the main village and many farms spread out around it. It is also part of the Herzogenbuchsee church area.

Changes in Administration

As mentioned, on January 1, 2011, the town of Bollodingen became part of Bettenhausen. Before that, on December 31, 2009, Bettenhausen's old administrative district, Amtsbezirk Wangen, was closed. The next day, January 1, 2010, Bettenhausen joined the new Verwaltungskreis Oberaargau district.

Bettenhausen's Coat of Arms

A coat of arms is a special design that represents a town or family. Bettenhausen's coat of arms has a blue background. On it, you can see a silver plow blade, which is a tool used for farming.
