Marin-Epagnier was a small town, also known as a municipality, in the Neuchâtel area of Swiss canton of Neuchâtel. On January 1, 2009, Marin-Epagnier joined with another town called Thielle-Wavre. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality named La Tène.
Location and Economy
Marin-Epagnier was located right at the top end of Lake Neuchâtel. It sat about 455 meters (1,493 feet) above sea level. In 2004, about 3,925 people lived there.
The town was close to Biel and was special because it was right on the border between areas where people speak French and areas where they speak German. It was also a place where many important roads met.
Because of its good location, Marin-Epagnier became home to many offices and workshops. These businesses focused on different industries, including:
- Micromechanics: Making very tiny, precise machine parts.
- Electronics: Creating electronic devices and components.
- Watchmaking: Crafting famous Swiss watches.
Some well-known companies like Métaux Précieux SA Métalor and TAG Heuer watches had operations there.
Town Symbol: Coat of Arms
The official symbol of Marin-Epagnier, called its coat of arms, looked like this: It had a black background (called "Sable" in heraldry). On this background, there was a golden lion standing on its hind legs (called "Lion rampant or"). The lion's tongue and claws were red (called "langued and armed Gules").
The Ancient Site of La Tène
Marin-Epagnier was home to a very important archaeological site from the Iron Age. This site is known as La Tène. The La Tène culture is named after this very place.
La Tène was the name of the area by the lake, just south of Epagnier, at the eastern end of Lake Neuchâtel. This area is famous for having a unique sandy beach, which is quite rare in Switzerland.
