Stein was once a small town in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It was part of the Toggenburg area. On January 1, 2013, Stein joined with Nesslau-Krummenau to form a new town called Nesslau.

Geography of Stein
Stein covered an area of about 12.3 square kilometers (4.7 square miles). Most of this land, about 57%, was used for farming. Forests covered a large part, about 37% of the area. Only a small portion, about 2%, had buildings or roads. The rest of the land included rivers or lakes.
Stein's Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Stein shows a green stone cliff on a gold background. This design is a simple example of a "canting arm." This means the picture on the shield hints at the town's name. In German, "Stein" means "stone." The stone shown on the coat of arms is the Goggeienberg, a small local rock formation.
People of Stein
In December 2011, Stein had 374 people living there. A small number of these residents, about 3.7%, were from other countries. Most people in Stein, about 98%, spoke German. A few people also spoke Finnish or Italian.
In 2000, about 15% of the population were children aged 0-9 years old. Teenagers aged 10-19 made up about 14% of the population. Most people lived in families with children.
Important Buildings in Stein
Stein is known for its two churches. The Reformed church was built a long time ago in 1497. It was updated in 1929. The Catholic church, called St. Jacob, was built more recently in 1927-1928. However, its fancy Rococo pulpit is much older, from 1770.
Economy of Stein
In 2005, many people in Stein worked in farming. This is called the primary economic sector. Some people also worked in factories, which is the secondary sector. Others worked in jobs that provide services, like shops or offices. This is known as the tertiary sector.
In 2000, 111 people worked in Stein itself. However, 75 residents traveled outside of Stein for their jobs. At the same time, 33 people came into Stein to work.
Religion in Stein
Based on information from 2000, about 43.5% of the people in Stein were Roman Catholic. About 47% belonged to the Swiss Reformed Church. A small number of people belonged to other Christian churches or were Islamic. About 2% of the population did not belong to any church.
