Amden is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of St. Gallen. Amden is known for its beautiful mountain views and its location near a large lake.

History of Amden

Amden has a long history! It was first mentioned in old writings way back in 1178. Back then, it was called Andimo monte Voraden. Over the years, its name changed a few times to Andimin and Ammon before becoming Amden.

The amazing Seerenbach waterfalls

Amden covers an area of about 43 square kilometers (16.6 square miles). A big part of this land, almost half, is covered by forests. About 39% of the land is used for farming.

The town sits high up on a flat area, like a terrace, above the northern shore of a beautiful lake called Walensee. Amden is a mix of places where tourists visit and small villages where people raise animals in the mountains.

The main village of Amden is about 908 meters (2,979 feet) above sea level. There are also smaller villages, called hamlets, like Fli and Betlis. Another popular spot is Arvenbüel, a vacation village even higher up at 1,259 meters (4,131 feet).

One of the most exciting natural features near Amden is the Seerenbach Falls. The middle part of these waterfalls is the tallest waterfall in all of Switzerland! It drops an incredible 302 meters (991 feet).

A coat of arms is like a special symbol or logo for a town or family. Amden's coat of arms has two main parts. The top part shows a red lion walking on a silver background. The bottom part has a golden crown on a blue background.
