He studied at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh. Later, he went to the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh. He became a priest in 1976.

After his training, he worked as a Curate at Old Saint Paul's, Edinburgh. A curate is a junior priest who helps in a church. In 1982, he became the Provost of St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth. A provost is the main priest in charge of a cathedral.
