The Grand Army of the Republic Hall is a special historic building. You can find it at 34 School Street in Rockland, Massachusetts, in the United States. This hall was built in 1899. It was created by members of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). They wanted to remember the soldiers who fought for the Union Army during the Civil War.

What is the Grand Army of the Republic Hall?

This building was designed by a local builder named William Harrison Hebberd. It has two stories and is made of wood. The roof is shaped like a hip. From the outside, it looks quite simple. The most interesting part is the main entrance. It has a porch with thin columns and decorative brackets.

Inside the Hall

The inside of the building is much more detailed. It still has many of its original decorations. These decorations are in a style called Queen Anne. This style was popular around the time the hall was built.

Honoring Civil War Heroes

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was an organization for soldiers. These were soldiers who fought for the Union during the Civil War. The GAR was very important after the war. It helped veterans and their families. This hall was built as a memorial to these brave soldiers. It helped keep their memory alive.

A Place for Meetings and Memories

For many years, the hall was a meeting place. It was home to the Gen. George L. Hartsuff GAR Post No. 74. This was one of many GAR posts in Massachusetts. Today, the hall is still used for meetings. It is now home to the Gen. George L. Hartsuff Camp No. 50. This group is part of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. This organization continues the work of the original Grand Army of the Republic. They help remember and honor the Union soldiers.

Why is it a Historic Place?

On May 16, 1997, the Grand Army of the Republic Hall became even more special. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important buildings, sites, and objects in the United States. Being on this list means the building is important to history. It helps protect it for future generations.
