The Grand Portage South-East River (also known as rivière du Grand Portage Sud-Est in French) is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into another river called the rivière du Grand Portage. This area is part of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

The river flows through a wild area called Lac-Ashuapmushuan. This territory is not organized into towns or cities.

The main activities in this river valley are forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. People also visit for fun, especially because of the nearby Ashuapmushuan Wildlife Reserve.

River's Journey

The Grand Portage South-East River starts at a place called Lac Demers. This lake is about 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi) long and sits high up at 497 metres (1,631 ft) above sea level.

Where the River Begins

The source of the river is in a mountainous area. It's located in the unorganized territory of Lac-Ashuapmushuan.

From its start at Lac Demers, the river flows for about 6.8 kilometres (4.2 mi). As it flows, it drops about 117 metres (384 ft) in height. The entire journey is through a forest.

Here's how the river flows:

  • It first goes south for about 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi).
  • Then it turns west and flows through Lake Marion. Lake Marion is about 1.6 kilometres (0.99 mi) long.
  • Next, it flows west for 2.3 kilometres (1.4 mi), making some twists and turns.
  • It continues northwest, then west, going down the mountain for 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi).
  • Finally, it flows north for 0.6 kilometres (0.37 mi) until it reaches its mouth.

Where the River Ends

The Grand Portage South-East River flows into the south side of the rivière du Grand Portage. This meeting point is about 11.5 kilometres (7.1 mi) southeast of where the Grand Portage river itself ends.

From this point, the water travels a long way:

  • It flows down the rivière du Grand Portage for 18.0 kilometres (11.2 mi).
  • Then it joins the Chigoubiche River for 46.2 kilometres (28.7 mi).
  • After that, it flows into the Ashuapmushuan River for 59.8 kilometres (37.2 mi).
  • The water then crosses Lac Saint-Jean for its full length, about 41.1 kilometres (25.5 mi).
  • Finally, it follows the Saguenay River for 172.3 kilometres (107.1 mi) eastward to Tadoussac. There, it joins the huge estuary of Saint Lawrence, which leads to the Atlantic Ocean.

River's Name

The official name "rivière du Grand Portage Sud-Est" was made official on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Place Names Bank of the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
