Grangeburg, also known as Granger or Grangerburg, is a small place in Houston County, Alabama, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town would. Instead, it's managed by the county. Grangeburg is located along Alabama State Route 53. It is about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) east-southeast of a town called Cottonwood.

History of Grangeburg

Grangeburg has an interesting history with a couple of name changes. It was first known as Granger. This name was chosen to honor a person named John Granger. Later on, the community's name was changed to Grangeburg.

Post Office and Community Growth

Having a post office was very important for communities in the past. It meant people could send and receive mail, which connected them to the outside world. Granger had its own post office for many years, from 1882 until 1908. After a short break, a post office reopened in the area. This time, it was under the new name, Grangeburg, and it operated from 1917 to 1925. The presence of a post office often showed that a community was growing and had enough people to need regular mail service.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

Grangeburg is an example of an unincorporated community. This means it's a defined area where people live, but it doesn't have its own separate city government. Unlike a city, it doesn't have a mayor or a city council. Instead, the services for the community, like roads and public safety, are usually provided by the larger county government. Many small communities across the United States are unincorporated.
