Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Emma Webster, often called Granny, is a beloved animated character from the classic Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes cartoons by Warner Bros.. She first appeared in the 1950s and 1960s. Granny is best known as the kind owner of Tweety, the little yellow canary, as well as Hector the Bulldog and Sylvester the Cat.

Granny is a sweet and caring older woman. She is very protective of her dear canary, Tweety. You can see how protective she is when Tweety is in danger, usually from Sylvester the Cat trying to catch him! Granny looks like a gentle old lady, but she is also very smart and clever in many cartoons.

Granny's First Appearances

The idea for Granny came from the character of Little Red Riding Hood. She first appeared in a cartoon called Little Red Waking Hood in 1937. Other early cartoons showed a similar granny character. These included The Cagey Canary (1941), Hiss and Make Up (1943), and Hare Force (1944).

Granny's Adventures

Even though Granny is usually with her animal friends, sometimes she appeared without them. For example, in the 1953 cartoon Hare Trimmed, she played a rich lady. Two characters, Yosemite Sam and Bugs Bunny, were trying to win her over. Bugs Bunny wanted to stop Yosemite Sam's sneaky plan. Sam wanted to marry Granny just to get her money! Bugs Bunny made sure that didn't happen. In this cartoon, Sam even called her Emma or Emmy.

Granny also appeared in many other fun cartoons over the years.
