The Grant Thornton Tower is a tall office building in Chicago, Illinois. It was designed by a company called Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. This building is 50 stories high and reaches 756 feet (230 meters) into the sky. It stands in an area of Chicago known as the Loop. The tower was finished in 1992. Before it was built, a bus station for Greyhound used to be on this spot.

One of the most special parts of the tower is its roof. The roof on the east side of the building is slanted. At night, lights shine on the top of the building, making it stand out in the Chicago skyline.

Building Design and History

Early Plans for a Twin Tower

When the Grant Thornton Tower was first planned, it was meant to have a twin building. This second tower would have been built nearby on Clark Street. However, the plan for the twin tower was stopped twice. It was first put on hold after the first tower was completed. Then, the idea was dropped again in 2001. Today, a parking garage stands where the second tower might have been built.

Connecting to the City

The building has a special connection underground. It links to the Chicago Pedway, which is a network of tunnels for walking. This pedway connects the tower to the food court of the James R. Thompson Center.

How the Tower Got Its Name

The tower has had a few different names over the years. It was first known as the Chicago Title & Trust Center. Later, people started calling it 161 North Clark because of its address. In 2012, a company called Grant Thornton International made a deal to put their name on the building. This happened before they moved into the tower in 2015. Now, the building is officially known as the Grant Thornton Tower. Its main address is 171 North Clark.

Companies Inside the Tower

Many different businesses have offices in the Grant Thornton Tower. Some of the companies that have been tenants include:
