The Granville Entertainment District is a lively area in Downtown Vancouver, Canada. It is well-known for its many restaurants, shops, and places for fun. This district is a popular spot for people to visit, especially in the evenings. It is mainly found along a seven-block stretch of the Granville Mall and the streets nearby.

History of Granville Street

In the late 1990s, the Vancouver city council had an idea. They wanted to create a special area in downtown Vancouver for entertainment. This plan allowed businesses to stay open later into the night.

Before it became the Entertainment District, this part of Granville Street was famous for something else. It was home to many movie theatres. Because of all these cinemas, people called this area "Theatre Row" for many years.

Over time, these movie theatres began to close. Some of them were changed into nightclubs. By 2012, the last movie theatre on "Theatre Row" closed its doors. This was the Granville 7 Cinemas. Now, there are no more movie theatres operating in that specific area.

Famous Former Theatres

Many well-known theatres once stood on Granville Street. Here are some of them:

• Capitol: This theatre opened in 1920. It was later known as Capitol 6. The building was taken down to build new homes.
• Caprice: First called Dominion in 1912, it later became Downtown. Today, it is the Caprice Nightclub.
• Colonial: This theatre opened in 1929. It was later removed to make way for a shopping center called Pacific Centre.
• Granville 7: This theatre had many names, including Globe and Paradise. It was the last movie theatre on Granville Street to close in 2012.
• Lyric: This building was once an opera house and later had different names like Orpheum. It was removed to build a large department store.
• Orpheum: Built in 1927, this beautiful building is now a concert hall. It is the home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
• Paradise: This theatre also changed names several times, including Studio and Eve. It is now the Studio Nightclub.
• Plaza: Originally the Maple Leaf, this theatre later became Odeon. Today, it is known as the Venue Nightclub.
• Vogue: This theatre opened in 1941. It is now a popular place for live shows and performances.
