Grass Island (Spanish: Isla Pasto) is a small island located at the entrance to Stromness Harbour in Stromness Bay, South Georgia. It is a noticeable landmark in the area.
The island was first known as "Mutton Island" around 1912. However, since 1920, the name Grass Island has been used consistently.

Grass Island's Role in the Falklands War
A Strategic Observation Post
In April 1982, during the Falklands War, Grass Island played a small but important role. British forces launched an operation called Operation Paraquet to take back control of South Georgia.
On April 22 and 23, a special team from the Special Air Service (SAS) landed on Grass Island. They arrived from the ship HMS Antrim.
The SAS team set up an observation post on the island. This allowed them to watch the positions of Argentine forces nearby. This information was important for planning future actions.
Making Grass Island Rat-Free
Protecting Native Wildlife
In 2000, Grass Island became free of rats. Rats are not native to the island and can cause a lot of harm to local wildlife, especially ground-nesting birds.
A team from New Zealand helped with the project to remove all the rats. This effort helps protect the island's natural environment and allows native species to thrive.
