History of Grawn
Grawn was first settled in the 1870s. It was originally called Blackwood. This name came from its first settler, James B. Blackwood.
A railway line, the Chicago and West Michigan Railway, was built through Blackwood in 1890. After the railway arrived, the village was renamed Grawn Station. This new name honored Charles T. Grawn. He was a superintendent at Central Michigan Normal School and later for Traverse City Area Public Schools. In the same year, the name was shortened to just Grawn. The community also got its first post office, with William H. Gibbs as the first postmaster. By 1905, potatoes had become a very important crop grown in Grawn.
In December 1995, a large fire broke out at a tire company in Grawn. The fire burned for 20 days. Some local residents and students from Blair Elementary School had to leave their homes and school for safety. Later, in 2003, certain chemicals used to put out the fire were found in the area.
Grawn was officially recognized as a census-designated place for the first time in the 2010 census. This gave it official boundaries and population numbers.
