  • Polypogon pedipilalis Guenée, 1854

The Zanclognatha pedipilalis, also known as the grayish zanclognatha, is a type of litter moth. It belongs to the Erebidae family, which is a large group of moths. This moth was first described by a scientist named Achille Guenée in 1854.

You can find the grayish zanclognatha across eastern North America. Its home stretches from Nova Scotia in Canada, south to Florida and Mississippi in the United States. It also lives west towards Alberta in Canada and Kansas in the US.

About the Grayish Zanclognatha

This moth is a fascinating insect that plays a part in its ecosystem. It's known as a "litter moth" because its young, called larvae, often live among dead leaves. These leaves are sometimes called "litter" on the forest floor.

What Does It Look Like?

The grayish zanclognatha is a medium-sized moth. Its wingspan (the distance from one wingtip to the other) is usually between 24 and 30 millimeters. That's about the length of two to three regular-sized paper clips! The moth has a grayish color, which helps it blend in with its surroundings.

Life Cycle of the Moth

Adult grayish zanclognatha moths are active during the warmer months. You can usually see them flying from May to August.

  • In northern areas, these moths typically have one main generation (a full life cycle from egg to adult). Sometimes, a small second group of moths might appear later in the season.
  • Further south, like in Missouri, they often have two generations each year.
  • In places like Florida, where it's warm for longer, they can have many generations throughout the year.

The young moths, called larvae, have an interesting diet. They mostly eat dead leaves found in deciduous woods. Deciduous woods are forests where trees lose their leaves in the fall, like oak or maple trees. By eating dead leaves, these larvae help break down plant material in the forest.
