Great Crossing was started in 1783 by a person named Robert Johnson. The community was built around a special spot in the Elkhorn Creek. This spot was shallow enough for large animals like bison to cross the water easily.

Over time, Great Crossing was known by a few different names. Some people called it Johnson's Station. Other names included Great Buffalo Crossing, The Great Crossing, and simply The Crossing.

The Old Post Office

For many years, Great Crossing had its own post office. It was open from 1811 until 1905.
