History of Stamping Ground
The city of Stamping Ground got its unique name from a long time ago. Large groups of bison (sometimes called buffalo) used to gather in this area. They would "stamp" their hooves on the ground, making the area well-known.
The town was officially started in 1817. It was first called Herndonsville, named after the local Herndon family. But in 1834, the name was changed to Stamping Ground.
A post office briefly opened in Stamping Ground in 1816. The Herndonsville post office served the area from 1823 until 1834. That's when it also changed its name to Stamping Ground.
