How the Company Started
The story of this brewery began a long time ago, in 1927. It was first called the Hub City Brewing Company. A few years later, in 1930, its name changed to the Western Canada Brewing Company. Then, in 1932, it changed again to Drewery's Limited.
In 1956, a company called O'Keefe Brewing bought the brewery. O'Keefe Brewing later became part of a bigger company called Carling O'Keefe. The brewery continued to operate under that name until 1989.
Employees Save the Brewery
In 1989, a very big company called Molson bought Carling O'Keefe. Molson then planned to close the brewery in Saskatoon. This would have meant that over 40 employees would lose their jobs.
But something amazing happened! A group of sixteen employees and managers decided to buy the brewery themselves from Molson. They succeeded in 1989, and in 1990, they formed the Great Western Brewing Company. Since then, the brewery has been owned and operated independently by this group.
