Great circle facts for kids
A great circle is the biggest circle you can draw on a sphere (like a ball). Imagine cutting an orange exactly in half – the cut line would be a great circle! It divides the sphere into two equal halves, called hemispheres. A great circle always has the same diameter (width) as the sphere itself. It's also the longest possible circle you can draw on a sphere.

What is a Great Circle?
A great circle is special because it's the largest circle that can fit on the surface of a sphere. If you were to slice a sphere right through its center, the edge of that slice would be a great circle. This means the great circle has the same center point as the sphere itself.
Examples of Great Circles
You can draw endless great circles on any perfect sphere. Think about a globe or the Earth:
- The Equator is a perfect example of a great circle. It goes all the way around the middle of the Earth, dividing it into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
- All the longitude lines (the lines that go from the North Pole to the South Pole) are also great circles. They all meet at the North Pole and the South Pole.
Why are Great Circles Important?
Great circles are very useful, especially for travel. They help us find the shortest path between two points on the surface of a sphere, like the Earth.
- When airplanes fly long distances, they often follow paths that are part of a great circle. This is because a great circle route is the shortest way to get from one place to another on Earth's curved surface.
- Sailors also use great circles to plan their journeys across oceans.
In simple terms, a straight line on a flat map is like a great circle on a round globe. It's the most direct route you can take on a curved surface.
