About This Parrot
This parrot is quite small, growing to about 15 centimeters long. Even though it's small, it's the biggest among all the different kinds of hanging parrots!
Most of these parrots are bright green. They have a bit of a yellowish color on their back. You'll also see red on their chin, the front edge of their wings, their rump (the area above their tail), and the top of their head. Female parrots usually don't have the red on their head.
There are also slightly different types of this parrot depending on where they live:
- Parrots from Muna and Buton islands have slightly lighter wings and tails. Their backs are a bit more yellowish.
- Parrots from the Togian Islands have a clear orange-yellow patch on their back. Their red chin spot is smaller, and their rump is a brighter red.
Reproduction and Life Cycle
Sulawesi hanging parrots make their nests inside holes in trees. When a female lays eggs, there are usually three of them. She sits on the eggs to keep them warm for about 20 days. After the chicks hatch, they stay in the nest for around 33 days before they are ready to fly out on their own.
