Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas, Toxteth facts for kids
The Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas is a beautiful and historic church in Toxteth, Liverpool. It's a special building, protected because of its history and design. The church was finished in 1870 and was built in a style called Neo-Byzantine architecture, which looks a bit like ancient Roman and Greek buildings. The architects were W. & J. Hay, and it was built by Henry Sumners. This church is a bigger version of an old church in Constantinople (now called Vefa Kilise Mosque).
A Special Building in Liverpool
The St. Nicholas Church was built in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. This was a time when many rich people in Liverpool were building very fancy houses there. The church stands in a neighborhood with many large homes. It's also near other important places of worship. These buildings showed off the wealth and status of important business leaders. Many of these leaders came from different backgrounds, which was quite unusual for Victorian England. Right next to St. Nicholas Church, you can find the Princes Road Synagogue. There's also an old French Gothic style Welsh Presbyterian Church.
What it Looks Like
The outside of the church is very fancy and detailed. It has many arches, one inside another. These arches are made with stripes of white stone and red brick. There are three domes over the entrance area. A fourth dome sits over the main part of the church. All these domes are placed on round bases. The inside of the church is quite simple compared to the fancy outside. It has white marble columns. The tops of these columns are decorated in the Byzantine style.
