Green Climate Fund facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is a special international fund. Its main job is to help countries around the world fight climate change. It is part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which is a big group of countries working together on climate issues.

The idea for the GCF came up in 2010 at a meeting in Mexico. It was officially agreed upon in December 2011 at a conference in South Africa. The fund's goal is to give money to developing countries. This money helps them deal with climate change. They can use it for projects, programs, or activities. These activities either help stop climate change or help countries adapt to the changes caused by global warming.

Where is the Green Climate Fund located?

The GCF has its main office in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea. The office officially opened its doors on December 4, 2013.

How is the Green Climate Fund managed?

A group called the board of directors runs the fund. This Board has 24 members. Half of the members are from developing countries. The other half are from developed countries.

The Board members choose two Co-Chairs to lead them. One Co-Chair is always from a developed country. The other is from a developing country. For example, Mr. Manfred Konukiewitz from Germany and Mr. Jose Maria Clemente Sarte Salceda from The Philippines have been Co-Chairs.

What challenges does the Green Climate Fund face?

People who watch the GCF closely have noticed that it still has some challenges. These challenges include how the fund works every day. They also include what its main jobs and goals are. How it is managed and how it will do its work are also big questions. The GCF Board or the countries involved in the UNFCCC must decide these things.
