The Green River is a small but important waterway located in the state of Oregon, United States. It is known as a tributary, which means it flows into a larger river. The Green River joins another stream called Five Rivers. This river begins its journey in a beautiful natural area known as the Siuslaw National Forest.

Where the Green River Flows

The Green River starts high up in the Central Oregon Coast Range. This is a mountain range that runs along the coast of Oregon. The river's source, or starting point, is about 1,162 feet (354 meters) above sea level.

River's Journey

From its source, the Green River generally flows towards the northeast. It winds its way through the landscape until it reaches the Five Rivers stream. This meeting point is located upstream from a small, quiet community called Fisher.

The place where the Green River joins Five Rivers is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) away from where Five Rivers itself meets an even larger river, the Alsea River. The mouth, or end, of the Green River is about 256 feet (78 meters) above sea level.

Smaller Streams Joining In

As the Green River travels, it collects water from smaller streams that flow into it. These are also called tributaries. The main named tributaries of the Green River are:

  • East Fork Green River
  • Ryan Creek

These smaller streams add to the flow of the Green River, helping it on its journey to Five Rivers.
