Green Village is a small, friendly community in New Jersey, USA. It's located in Morris County, near the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. This village is special because it's part of two different townships: Harding and Chatham. It was named after Ashbel Green, who used to be the president of Princeton University.

Green Village is known as an "unincorporated community" and a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's a recognized area with its own identity, but it doesn't have its own separate local government. Instead, it shares services and rules with Harding Township and Chatham Township.

Life in Green Village

Green Village has its own post office and a volunteer fire department. You can also find a plant nursery called The Farm at Green Village, a deli, a Methodist church, and a gas station. The community is mainly centered around three streets: Green Village Road, Meyersville Road, and Britten Road. There's also a discussion about whether a part of Woodland Road should be included.

Green Village Fire Department

The Green Village Fire Department has a long and interesting history. Before 1922, firefighters from Madison helped put out fires in Green Village. But in March 1922, people in Green Village decided to start their own volunteer fire company. They met in the old school house, which is now the Green Village Deli.

Starting the Fire Company

At that first meeting, the Chief from the Madison Fire Company explained how a volunteer fire company works. The men present signed papers to officially create their own company. The Green Village Fire Company was officially formed on April 17, 1922.

A few months later, in November 1922, a group of women also met. They formed the Green Village Ladies Auxiliary. Their goal was to help the firefighters and build a friendly spirit in the community. They raised money by holding dances, suppers, teas, and card parties. This money helped build the firehouse.

Early Firefighting Tools

One of the first rules for firefighters was that each member had to buy a fire bucket. These buckets had rounded bottoms so they couldn't be set down. This made sure they were always ready for emergencies. When there was a fire, firefighters would form two lines. One line passed buckets of water to the fire, and the other line passed the empty buckets back for more water.

The fire company's first piece of equipment was a wagon with a chemical tank. They bought it from the Newark Fire Department. This wagon was pulled to fires by attaching it to the back of a car. In 1923, they bought their first motorized truck, a Reo truck. It carried four copper chemical tanks and was used for over 15 years.

Building the Firehouse

Work on the firehouse began soon after the fire company was formed. Mr. William DeMott, who owned a saw mill in Green Village, donated the land. Residents donated trees, and the fire company members cut them into logs. These logs were then taken to Daniel Pierson's saw mill, where they were cut into lumber for free. The original firehouse was mostly built by the volunteer members themselves, who gave their time and skills.

Over the years, the firehouse has grown. In 1954, two extra bays were added for fire trucks. More expansion happened in the mid-1980s, making the bay area even bigger. They also added a command office and a banquet room that the public can use. All the designs for these additions were done by Walter Pfeiffer, who also donated beautiful chandeliers. In 1990, Robert Swenor renovated the kitchen and foyer areas.
