Greenfield is a small community in Poinsett County, Arkansas, United States. It is not an official city but a local area. Greenfield is about five miles north of Harrisburg and ten miles south of Jonesboro. It sits on the new Arkansas Highway 1.

Greenfield is located at the base of Crowley's Ridge. This is a long, narrow hill formation that stretches across Arkansas. The community was first built along the Missouri Pacific Railroad. This made it a "railroad town."

History of Greenfield

In the past, Greenfield was a busy place. It had a train station and passenger train service. There were five general stores where people could buy many things. The community also had two churches, a hotel, and several mills. These included a saw mill, a cotton gin, and a flour mill. Many homes were also built there.

Today, most of these old buildings are gone. Only the churches and houses remain. In the 1800s, many trees in the area were cut down for timber. This changed the landscape quite a bit.

Farming and Research

Today, farming is very important in Greenfield. Local farms grow many different crops. These include soybeans, rice, wheat, milo, cotton, and corn.

In 2019, the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville bought some land near Greenfield. This land is on the west side of Highway 1. In 2020, construction started there. This new site will be the home of the UA Rice Research and Extension Complex. This complex will help scientists study and improve rice farming.
