Greg Burns was born on November 9, 1972. He is an American football coach and a former player. Currently, he works as the cornerbacks coach at San Jose State University. Before this, he was an analyst at UCLA and coached defensive backs at the University of Southern California.

Playing Days: A College Star
Greg Burns played as a defensive back for Washington State University. He was a key player for four years on their football team. During his second year, he was recognized as one of the best players in his conference, the PAC-10.
Coaching Journey: From College to Pros
Early Coaching Steps
After his playing career, Greg Burns started coaching. In 1996, he helped out the coaches at Washington State while he earned his master's degree. The next year, 1997, he worked as an assistant coach at Idaho.
Making a Mark at Louisville and USC
From 1998 to 2001, Burns coached defensive backs at Louisville. During his time there, he helped train six players who were named among the best in their conference.
Then, from 2002 to 2005, Burns coached the defensive backs at USC. He worked under head coach Pete Carroll. This was a very successful period! Burns was part of the coaching team when the Trojans won two national championships in a row, in 2003 and 2004. He also coached two players who were named All-Americans during his time at USC.
Coaching in the NFL and Other Colleges
In 2006, Burns moved to professional football. He coached defensive backs for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After that, he spent one season in 2007 with Kansas State as a defensive back coach.
He then coached the same position at Arizona State from 2008 to 2011. In 2012, he coached at Purdue. In 2013, Greg Burns joined the coaching team at UMass as their defensive backs coach.
Recent Coaching Roles
From 2014 to 2017, Burns coached defensive backs for the California Golden Bears. He then moved to Oregon State in 2018. In 2019, he returned to USC to coach defensive backs again. In 2020, he coached cornerbacks at Arizona. From 2021 to 2023, he worked as an analyst at UCLA. Since 2024, he has been the cornerbacks coach at San Jose State.
Bowl Game Experience
Throughout his coaching career, Greg Burns has been part of 10 bowl games. These include four major Bowl Championship Series (BCS) games and two national championship games.
