Gregory R. Mohns (born May 1, 1950 – died July 25, 2012) was an important person in professional football. He worked as an executive and coach for many teams. He was known for his smart decisions about players. He helped teams like the Toronto Argonauts become very successful.
A Football Journey
Gregory Mohns was born in Pasadena, California. He played football as an offensive lineman in college. He played for Bradley University and Baker University. After college, he started his coaching career. He was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State University in 1972. Then he became a full-time assistant coach there.
From 1977 to 1980, Mohns was an assistant coach at Arizona State. In 1980, he became a head coach for the first time. He coached at Ventura College. His team had a good record of 15 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties.
In 1983, Mohns joined the Kansas City Chiefs. He worked as a talent scout. A scout finds new players for the team. By 1986, he was the Coordinator of Pro Scouting. This was when the Chiefs made it to the playoffs for the first time in many years.
Greg Mohns then moved to the Canadian Football League (CFL). In 1991, he became the Director of Player Personnel for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. This means he was in charge of finding and managing players. From 1992 to 1994, he was the assistant general manager for the Tiger-Cats.
In 1995, he worked for the Memphis Mad Dogs. Then, in 1996, he joined the Toronto Argonauts. He became their assistant general manager and director of football operations. Mohns helped the Argonauts turn their team around. They went from winning only 4 games to winning 15 games. They also won the 84th Grey Cup, which is like the championship game in the CFL.
In 1998, Mohns moved to the BC Lions. He became their head coach. As head coach, his team won 22 games and lost 12 games. This was one of the best winning percentages in the Lions' history at that time.
After his time with the Lions, Mohns worked for the San Francisco Demons. This was for the XFL's only season. He returned to the Toronto Argonauts in 2003. He was the director of football operations and player personnel. In 2005, he was promoted to assistant general manager. He stayed in this role until 2010.
Greg Mohns passed away on July 25, 2012, at the age of 62. At the time of his death, he was working for the Omaha Nighthawks. They were a team in the United Football League (UFL).
