Greg Sims' Baseball Journey
Starting Out in Baseball
Greg Sims first signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates team. After his first year playing professionally, the Houston Astros picked him in a special draft called the Rule 5 draft. This meant he moved to a new team.
His Major League Debut
Greg played his first Major League Baseball game on April 15, 1966. He came into the game to play defense for the Astros' left fielder, Lee Maye. In his only turn at bat, he struck out. He also made one play where he caught the ball for an out.
After this, Greg played in six more games as a pinch hitter. A pinch hitter is a player who bats in place of another player. He was then sent to a lower league team, the Class A Durham Bulls.
His Only Big League Hit
In his second-to-last Major League Baseball game, on May 14, Greg got his only big-league hit. It was a single off a pitcher named Terry Fox. This hit happened in the 11th inning and helped his team score three runs. Those runs helped the Astros win the game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
