Greg Yuchang Tseng, born on November 14, 1979, is an American entrepreneur. He creates businesses that operate online. He was born in Taiwan. Tseng is most famous for co-founding and being the CEO of Tagged. This is a well-known social networking website. He also used to be the CEO of JumpStart Technologies, LLC.

Greg Tseng's Early Life and Education

Greg Tseng was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He grew up in Washington, Virginia, in the United States. His family was Taiwanese American. Tseng went to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. He won many awards for his skills in math and science.

In 1993, he placed 9th in the national MathCounts competition. The next year, in 1994, he got a perfect score in the American High School Mathematics Exam. He also qualified for the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad every year from 1994 to 1997.

Science Projects and Recognition

In 1997, Tseng was a finalist in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. His project was about a special sensor that used fiber optics. This sensor could find ions and be used in different places. The Fairfax County School Board praised his work. Because of this project, Tseng was also featured in a timeline by The American Physical Society. He was also added to The National Gallery for America's Young Inventors.

From 1997 to 2004, Tseng worked as a researcher. He focused on nanotechnology. He did this at The MITRE Corporation, Harvard University, and Stanford University. At MITRE, he helped write an article for Science journal. It was about creating "Nanocomputers."

In 2001, Tseng earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. He studied Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics at Harvard University. He also helped write another Science article. This one was about a new type of memory using carbon nanotubes. This technology is now used by a company called Nantero. At Stanford, he continued his research. He then earned his Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University in 2004. He received a special fellowship for his studies.

Greg Tseng: An Online Business Creator

While at Harvard, Greg Tseng was very active in business. From 1998 to 2000, he was the director of the Harvard Entrepreneurs Club (HEC). He also helped write a book called The Harvard Entrepreneurs Club Guide to Starting Your Own Business.

Starting Online Businesses

In 1999, Tseng and two classmates started flyingchickens.com. This website helped students compare prices for Harvard textbooks. In 2000, this service joined with Limespot.com. It grew to help students at over 80 college campuses. Later in 2000, Tseng and three other young entrepreneurs were featured in The New York Times and Fast Company.

While at Harvard, Tseng also co-founded Jumpstart Technologies. He started this company with his friend and business partner, Johann Schleier-Smith. Jumpstart helped create other online businesses. These included an online dating site called CrushLink and the social networking site hi5.

Creating Tagged.com

In October 2004, Tseng and Johann Schleier-Smith co-founded Tagged. BusinessWeek magazine named them among "Tech's Best Young Entrepreneurs." They also received a U.S. patent for their idea. It was about "User created tags for online social networking." This idea led to over 200,000 user-created tags on Tagged.

As of July 2014, Tseng is the CEO of Tagged. He also gives advice to other new technology companies in Silicon Valley.

At first, Tagged was only for teenagers. But Tseng wanted the business to grow bigger. He decided to expand its audience to people aged 13 and older in all countries. In 2007, he changed Tagged's business plan. He wanted it to become a social network where people could meet new friends. He called this idea "social discovery."
