The Affleck House is a special home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It was designed by a famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright. This house is a type called a "Usonian" home. Only about 25 Usonian homes were built before World War II. Today, Lawrence Technological University owns the house. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 3, 1985, which means it's a very important historical building.

Building the Affleck House

Gregor S. Affleck grew up near Spring Green, Wisconsin. This was close to Frank Lloyd Wright's family home. So, Gregor knew a lot about Wright's unique building style. Gregor's wife, Elizabeth, especially loved Wright's famous house called Fallingwater.

In 1940, the Afflecks wanted to build their own home. They asked Wright to design it for them. The land they chose was very special. It was covered in trees and had no flat areas. This allowed Wright to create a design that fit perfectly on the sloped ground. The house was finished in 1941.

A Home for Learning

Later, the Afflecks asked Wright to build another house next door. This second house is known as the Pergola House.

In 1978, the Affleck family gave their house to Lawrence Technological University. The university promised to take good care of the house. They also use it as a teaching tool. Students and teachers from the College of Architecture and Design learn from this amazing building.

What the House Looks Like

The Affleck House is a Usonian style home. It is built from brick and cypress wood. It sits in a natural bowl-shaped area on a hill.

When you enter, you step into a small foyer. This leads to a main hallway called a loggia. The loggia has a skylight, letting in lots of natural light. A special opening in the loggia floor looks down onto a small stream below.

The loggia connects to the living and dining areas. These rooms hang out over the stream, almost like they are floating. The living room has a large fireplace at its center. A small kitchen is nearby. It has two levels, with stairs leading down to a bedroom below. The main bedrooms are a half-story above the loggia. There is a hallway with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
