Grenique Roshawn Harper, known simply as Grenique (pronounced grə-NEEK), is an American R&B soul singer. She was born on November 13 in Landover, Maryland.
About Grenique
Grenique grew up in a family that loved music and poetry. Her mom was a poet, and her dad was a singer. They named her "Grenique" because her dad's name was Greg, and they thought she would be unique. As a child, Grenique listened to many famous singers. These included Chaka Khan, Minnie Riperton, and Ella Fitzgerald. She also enjoyed bands like Cameo and Average White Band.
Her Music Journey
Grenique started her music career in 1998. One of her first songs, "Disco," was featured in the movie soundtrack for Rush Hour. This was a big step for her!
Just before her 22nd birthday, Grenique signed with Motown Records. This famous record label was led by Kedar Massenberg at the time. Singer Chico DeBarge also helped her join Motown.
In 1999, Grenique released her first album. It was called Black Butterfly. The main song from the album was "Should I." The album reached number 49 on the Billboard Top R&B Hip-Hop Chart. It also made it to number 17 on the Heatseekers album chart.
Grenique also lent her voice to other artists. She sang background vocals on Alyson Williams' album, It's About Time. Later, in 2008, Grenique helped write a song for the rapper The Game. The song was called "Game's Pain."
