The Grevillea commutata is a type of shrub that grows naturally along the west coast of the Mid West area in Western Australia. It belongs to a group of plants called Grevillea.

About Grevillea commutata

This plant is a spreading shrub with many branches. It usually grows to be about 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) tall. Its branches are covered in soft, silky hairs.

What it Looks Like

The Grevillea commutata has simple, flat leaves. These leaves are long and narrow, or sometimes wider at the top, and they point upwards. They are typically 50 to 100 millimeters (2 to 4 inches) long and 2 to 9 millimeters (0.08 to 0.35 inches) wide.

The plant produces flowers that can be white, cream, green, or pink. These flowers grow in clusters at the end of the branches. You can see them blooming for most of the year, from February all the way to December. After the flowers, the plant grows a bumpy, wrinkled, oval-shaped fruit. This fruit is smooth and measures about 10 to 14 millimeters (0.4 to 0.6 inches) long.

Where it Grows

You can find Grevillea commutata growing in an area north of the Murchison River, stretching up to the Greenough River. It also grows inland as far as Yuna. This shrub prefers to grow among small trees or in tall scrubland and heathland areas. It thrives in sandy or loamy soils found on sandplains, sand dunes, or rocky breakaway areas.

Different Types

There are two main types, or subspecies, of Grevillea commutata that scientists know about:

  • Grevillea commutata subsp. commutata
  • Grevillea commutata subsp. pinnatisecta
