Gries im Sellrain is a small village located in the beautiful Sellrain Valley in Austria. It's part of the Innsbruck-Land area. The village is nestled in the valley, and the Melach River flows right through it. It's a quiet place surrounded by mountains.
People Living in Gries
The number of people living in Gries im Sellrain has changed over time. In 1869, there were about 433 residents. The population went down a bit in the early 1900s but started to grow steadily after the 1950s. By 2015, the village had nearly 600 people living there. This shows that more and more people have chosen to make Gries their home over the years.
About the Area
Gries is located in the middle part of the Sellrain Valley. This valley is a smaller valley that branches off from the larger Inn Valley. Another valley, the Lüsens Valley, also starts from Gries. The Zirmbach River, which comes from a nearby village called St. Sigmund, joins the Melach River right in the center of Gries.
The village also includes several smaller settlements, or "hamlets," located on the hillsides. These include places like Obermarendebach. The valley floor around Gries can sometimes be affected by floods.
History of Gries
The name "Gries" was first written down in 1410. It was used to describe a specific field. The name comes from an old word meaning 'rubble' or 'coarse sand'. This refers to the sandy material that was left behind where the Melach and Zirmbach rivers meet.
For a long time, Gries was part of the larger church area of Axams. However, the people of Gries built their own church, St. Martin's Church, between 1733 and 1734. Gries officially became its own separate church parish in 1891.
Important buildings for the community were also constructed over the years. An elementary school was built between 1951 and 1953. The local government office, called the municipal office, was built in 1979 and 1980. In 2003, a landslide happened, which led to the building of a special dam. This dam helps protect the Reichenhöfe settlement from future landslides.
