Early Life and Education
Griffin Matthews was born in 1981 or 1982 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He studied musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.).
Helping Others in Africa
Griffin Matthews spent two years working with the Peace Corps in West Africa. The Peace Corps is a program where Americans volunteer to help people in other countries.
In 2005, he started a group called UgandaProject. This group helps teenagers in Uganda get an education. It was first named Be The Change Uganda.
Creating Musicals
Griffin Matthews co-wrote a musical with his husband, Matt Gould. The musical was first called Witness Uganda. It was later renamed Invisible Thread.
This musical was based on Matthews' own experiences volunteering in Uganda. The musical won the Richard Rodgers Awards for Musical Theatre in both 2012 and 2014. These awards celebrate new musical theater works.
