About Griggs House
The Griggs House was built in a style called Federal. It had two stories and was made of wood. The outside was covered in stucco, which is a type of plaster. The house sat on a strong stone foundation.
It was located close to the town's granite quarry. The town of Granite, Maryland, was even named after this quarry. Maps from 1877 show that the house was already there.
Its Later Years
By 1984, the Griggs House was no longer lived in. The Department of Natural Resources looked at the property. This land was part of Patapsco Valley State Park. Sadly, people had broken into the house and taken things from inside.
The Blair Witch Project Connection
In 1999, the Griggs House became very well-known. It was used for the scary ending of The Blair Witch Project movie. After the movie was filmed, the State of Maryland said they would tear down the old house.
Many people wanted to save the house because the movie was so popular. Money was even raised to help protect it. The State of Maryland then announced that the house would not be torn down. However, the Griggs House was later demolished without any new public announcement.
