The Grindstone River is a river in Minnesota, USA. It is about 6.7 miles (10.8 kilometers) long. This river flows into the Kettle River. The name "Grindstone River" comes from two Native American languages. In the Dakota language, it was called Iŋswú watpá, meaning "Small Stones River." In the Ojibwe language, it was known as Zhiigwanaabikokaa-ziibi, which means "River abundant with grind stones."

About the Grindstone River

The Grindstone River is special because of the type of rock found near it. Sandstone from this area was used to make sharpening stones. These stones were important tools for sharpening knives and other items. The town of Hinckley in Minnesota is also named after this river. In Ojibwe, Hinckley is called Gaa-zhiigwanaabikokaag, which connects back to the idea of grindstones.

Where Does the River Start?

The Grindstone River actually has two main branches, or "forks," that come together.

The South Fork

The South Fork Grindstone River begins in a wet, marshy area in Kroschel Township, Kanabec County. From there, it flows towards the south and then to the east.

The North Fork

The North Fork Grindstone River starts from Grindstone Lake. This lake is located in Dell Grove Township, Pine County. The North Fork then flows south.

How the Forks Join

Both the North Fork and South Fork of the Grindstone River meet up in the town of Hinckley. After they join, the main Grindstone River flows generally towards the east. It eventually empties into the Kettle River in Barry Township, Pine County.

An Old River on the Map

The Grindstone River and its source, Grindstone Lake, have been known for a long time. They were even shown on a very old map from 1757. This map was called the Mitchell Map. It shows how important and recognized this river system was, even centuries ago.
