History of Grinnell
Grinnell was named after a businessman called Moses Hicks Grinnell. The city was founded in the 1880s.
The first newspaper in Grinnell was named Golden Belt. It started in 1885.

Education in Grinnell
The local public schools are part of the Grinnell USD 291 school district. High school students from Grinnell attend Wheatland High School. This is thanks to a special agreement with Wheatland USD 292.
The sports teams at Wheatland High School are called the Thunderhawks. Grinnell High School used to exist but closed due to this agreement.
Past Championships
The Grinnell Warriors, before the high school closed, won several state championships:
- In 1974, the Boys Basketball team won the Class 1A championship.
- The Girls Volleyball team won the Class 1A championship in 1976, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1987, and 1988.
- The Girls Basketball team won the Class 1A championship in 1985.
