Griswold, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Griswold was once a small community located in Monterey County, California. It was situated in a place called Long Valley, about 13.7 kilometers (or 8.5 miles) east of a town named San Lucas.

What Was Griswold?

Griswold was a "settlement," which means it was a place where people lived and built homes or businesses. However, it was a "former" settlement, meaning people no longer live there today. Many small settlements like Griswold grew up around specific activities, like farming or mining, and sometimes they faded away when those activities changed or stopped.

A Short History

Griswold had its own post office for a short time. The post office started operating in 1884. This was an important service because it allowed people in Griswold to send and receive mail. But the post office didn't stay open for very long. In 1887, just three years later, the mail service for Griswold was moved to nearby San Lucas. This often happens when a small community shrinks or people move away.
